There’s something quite special about Australian native flowers. Our lands are broad and varied and its flora reflects this, some soft and fragile others rugged and tough, some small, some large, some rounded and some jagged. Their shape vary significantly but are always identifiably Australian.
For me, capturing them in watercolour matches their variation and distinctiveness – once marks are made and pigment is applied, it is rarely reworked making each gesture and brushstroke consequential.
Painting in this way, the result is unpredictable making the finished work is a unique combination of observation, experience, and chance.
Growing up in rural Australia, my playgrounds were the gardens of native flora my father grew. I shared them with the wildlife they attracted.
Flora can be profoundly nostalgic, recalling fond memories and evoking strong feelings, so now, it is what I paint.
